Douglas County Democrats Letter to Senator Nelson
Apr 27, 03:37 PM CST

The Douglas County Democratic Party sent the following letter to Senator Ben Nelson in support of his vote in favor of a timeline for our troop withdrawal from Iraq:
April 27, 2007
Honorable E. Benjamin Nelson
United States Senate
7602 Pacific St.
Omaha, NE 68114Dear Senator Nelson:
I am writing on behalf of the Douglas County Democratic Party to express our support for you following your courageous vote yesterday on the appropriations bill which set a timeline for withdrawing United States troops from Iraq. We know this was a tough decision. Like you, we admire and support the men and women serving our country in the armed services. We believe it is time to begin to set the timeline for bringing our troops home from Iraq. They have served us long, hard, and bravely.
The significance of your vote was brought home to me yesterday during a viewing of the three thousand three hundred United States flags posted at the University of Nebraska Omaha Campus by our UNO Student Democrats I hope before you left on your trip to Iraq, you had a chance to see this solemn tribute to the ultimate sacrifice paid by those who nobly served the cause of freedom. There are photos available on the internet at www.tributetothefallen.com.
Sincerely,
Christopher D. Jerram, Chairman
Douglas County Democratic Party

As for the Tribute To The Fallen, Sen. Nelson was indispensables to making this year’s event a reality.
His support in purchasing this year’s flags was greatly appreciated, and it was fitting that only a few hours before our closing ceremonies honoring the fallen soldiers, he was in Washington DC fighting for those still on the ground.
I strongly believe that our Democratic elected officials deserve our criticism when they act against the best interest or wishes of those who voted for and worked to get them elected.
But those same officials also deserve our thanks and respect when they step up to the plate.
Today Senator Nelson, you certainly deserve our heartfelt thanks.

Kevin Drum today(quote is from NYT report):
NO LIGHT IN THE TUNNEL….Is it a surge or an escalation?
The Bush administration will not try to assess whether the troop increase in Iraq is producing signs of political progress or greater security until September, and many of Mr. Bush’s top advisers now anticipate that any gains by then will be limited, according to senior administration officials.
In interviews over the past week, the officials made clear that the White House is gradually scaling back its expectations for the government of President Nuri Kamal al-Maliki. The timelines they are now discussing suggest that the White House may maintain the increased numbers of American troops in Iraq well into next year.
Translation: Maliki has no authority whatsoever; the Iraqi troops we’ve been training for the past three years are still useless; there’s no political progress in sight; and in the meantime we’re stalling for dear life, hoping against hope that something good magically happens. In Republican leadership circles, this is called a “foreign policy.” The rest of us have a different name for it.
