'Hagel Guy' No More

Jun 07, 11:22 AM CST

Nebraska Democratic Party State Chair Steve Achelpohl released the following statement in response to Attorney General Jon Bruning’s announcement this morning:

“Nebraska Republicans like Jon Bruning continue to show us that they are unable to find the decisiveness necessary to lead this state forward. Bruning has shared his varied intentions regarding the Senate race more times than a Hollywood remake of Oceans 11.”

“Jon Bruning needs to focus on the job Nebraskans elected him to do.”

“We wonder if he will hold a press conference next week to announce what office he will seek in 2010.”

  1. What’s clear in Bruning’s announcement is that he has no real ideas – no real opinions of his own. He’s running as the guy who is not Chuck Hagel. It might help him, heck, he might even win the Republican primary. But what’s going to happen when he’s not running against Chuck Hagel, but Bob Kerrey or Mike Fahey?

  2. What will happen, Dave, when Mr. Bruning runs against someone other than Hagel…he’ll equate his oponent to Hagel. That is the only way his campaign will survive. Mr. Bruning has already defined his campaign as completely negative! He doesn’t have the courage to run a clean and postive campaign that is about issues and not about the candidates. Just take a look at the past Republican Candidate who ran against Ben Nelson. Pete Ricketts didn’t have a message except “I’m white and I’m rich, vote for me.” Bruning’s message will be “I’m the Republican lap dog you so want to have representing you in the Senate, vote for me!”

Isn’t it about time that Nebraskans deserve a candidate who will talk about what troubles this state and the nation instead of bashing their opponent?! Much like how Mayor Chris Beutler ran his campaign for the top job in Lincoln. I would welcome that style of campainging, even from the Republicans in Nebraska.

  3. Hagel will not run for relection because in 1996 he pledged that he would only serve two terms.
Hagel in 1996 relentlessly attacked then Governor Nelson for abandoning his pledge to serve his entire term as governor.

Regardless of whthter you think Hagel was right to bring up impeaching Bush or pointing out that the GOP has lost its way, one must agree that given Hagel’s belief in 96 that a pledge defines one’s charecter, Hagel wil honor his 1996 term linits pledge.

  4. I am amazed by Bruning’s about-face as of late. A few weeks ago, he was Hagel’s biggest fan, but now cannot stand the guy. What a political opportunist this Bruning is. I cannot believe Nebraska puts up with him. I take this as a sign that the Republican Party here in Nebraska is in disarray. As a side note, isn’t there some kind of campaign regulation forbidding campaigning on state property? Hopefully, someone can shed some light on this as it was clear Bruning made his announcement from the state capitol.

  5. Any Democrat campaigning in the next election would be wise to stress that Nebraska’s footsteps toward Global Warming has risen 15%.

  6. I don’t see Hagel running again. I actually see another run: Bloomberg/Hagel, Independents for Prez/VP.

    We will see!

  7. The Rotunda can be used by any candidate just as the steps of the Capitol can be.
Vince is correct about Hagel honoring his word. He will.
Bruning will win because he is rock solid and a political machine. So while you are all on the sidelines as arm chair QB’s remember that their is no “D” in the race. Who challenged Bruning for AG??
D’s are better than your defeatist posts. Of course our posts are censored/filtered so who knows where we stand. I’ll check back on Monday to see if my post made it.
