Dave the Duck: "No Comment" on SCHIP Expansion

Oct 05, 12:32 PM CST

“Dave the Duck” is at it again folks.

Considering the recent SCHIP veto by President Bush, Nebraskans would hope that our state government leaders would be fighting tooth and nail on behalf of Nebraska’s children. The current proposed expansion would give Nebraska additional federal money to use in enrolling the additional 17,000 children eligible for Kids Connection, Nebraska’s health insurance program for children which began under then Governor Ben Nelson.

And where does Dave Heineman stand on working to bring more federal money to help Nebraska’s poor children?

”...He is not commenting on the expansion of the (SCHIP) program…” said spokeswoman Jen Rae Hein [Lincoln Journal Star, 10/5/07]

The governor’s response is typical of the leadership we’ve received under his tenure. A bipartisan group of 43 governors commented on the expansion of SCHIP. Unfortunately, we do not have a governor who will stand up to his Party and go to bat for Nebraska’s vulnerable children.

The bill vetoed by Bush was a bipartisan compromise which enjoyed support from Republicans like Orin Hatch of Utah and Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Grassley, in his comments on the floor of the Senate, refuted claims by fellow Republicans that the plan amounted to socialized medicine and that children in families making $80,000 would be eligible for the program.

By not expanding the program, and simply extending it, as Heineman appears to support, over a million children would lose coverage according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

  1. Not only did Grassley support it on the Senate floor he co-wrote the current legislation. It is good to see that bipartisanship is alive in DC, too bad our Congressional Delegation feels differently.

Terry in particular considering on his website he says, “I believe Congress must adopt policies that help, not hurt, the ability of all Americans to access health care and make it more affordable.”

What a hypocrite. Let’s vote him out.

  2. It can’t be said better than this cartoon by Neal Obermeyer.

Dave the Duck is some cute wordplay but it really does a disservice to our waterfowl friends. After all, a duck has a spine.

  3. Good point, Kyle. Love the cartoon. As usual, Obermeyer hit it right on.

Dave the Duck was a theme from the ‘06 campaign. Guess that was a year ago now. How time flies.
