YD's: Stand Up for What You Believe, Fellow Democrats
Nov 04, 07:33 PM CST
Last night in Omaha, the Nebraska Young Democrats held their second annual “Forever Young Dinner.” While I wasn’t able to make it this year, I’m told it was another great event.
You may have heard that the group honored Nebraska Republican Attorney General and 2008 Senate Candidate Jon Bruning with a “Fallen Star” award. During his years at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, Bruning was a steady voice for progressive values. And then he fell to the temptation of political ambition, a blind ambition that continues to drive his daily life today.
I could share many thoughts about Jon, but I think I’ll turn the floor over to NYD President Kyle Michaelis who shares with his readers on the New Nebraska Network his speech from last night.
Great work, Nebraska Young Democrats!

Matt Soener from Creighton Prep, Rachel Dick from UNO, and Bri McLarty and Sally Leach from UNL earned the “Rising Star” awards on Saturday night.
The Young Democrats chose to give the “Forever Young” award to David Hahn.
Thanks to the NYD for putting on a great event.

I’m quite familiar with all that David Hahn has done and what he stands for. It was time he got the recognition that he so very much deserved.
Could you give us a little more background on the Rising Stars?

Rachel Dick has taken the lead on women’s issues in the UNO College Democrats, raising awareness of domestic violence and sexual abuse, and taking an active leadership role in the women’s caucus that promoted HPV awareness in February.
Sally Leach did youth outreach for Scott Kleeb’s congressional campaign. She is currently serving as Nebraska Young Democrats’ chapter-building committee chair.
Bri McLarty worked as an intern during the 2007 Lincoln city elections working on GOTV on UNL’s campus. She is currently President of UNL Young Democrats and played a major role in the success of the 2007 Forever Young Dinner.
Matt Soener has been one of the most active high school Dems in Omaha, as a member of the Omaha Creighton Prep (Go Junior Jays!) Young Democrats and the Omaha High School Dems.
These four YDs make us all proud and are a testament to the power of young people to make a difference in their community while creating a brighter future for the Nebraska Democratic Party.
