Terry Says No to Pay Raise, Takes it Anyway

Jan 14, 01:30 PM CST

This summer, as Congress debated whether or not to increase their pay, Republican Congressman Lee Terry was the only member of Nebraska’s delegation to speak up against the raise. According to the Omaha World Herald, Terry “joined Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT) in seeking a specific vote on the question over the summer.” [Omaha World Herald, 1/14/08]

Terry has said he doesn’t deserve a raise. While we don’t disagree, we wonder where the increase in his pay will go.

Even Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry thinks that Terry shouldn’t take the extra cash. “Any lawmaker who opposes the increase should back up the rhetoric by not accepting the extra money, Fortenberry said.” [Omaha World Herald, 1/14/08]

A spokesperson for Senator Chuck Hagel said Hagel “finds it hypocritical for people to oppose the increase and take the money.”

Wow, and these are Lee’s friends!

There are many great Nebraska non-profit organizations that would benefit from a donation by Terry. While Matheson has committed to donating his raise to charity, Lee won’t do the same.
