Martin Luther King, Jr. always seemed to be a somewhat reluctant icon. He seemed to be truly driven by his faith and his time more that any other leader we tend to show reverence. He never seemed to be driven by anything other than moving people forward.
We have moved forward. There is now much more tolerance and compassion than there were in those times. But, the remembrance also brings to mind how far we still need to go. Federal indifference to Katrina victims, the racist tone to much of the immigration debate and indifference to world opinion of our foreign policy are just few of the reminders of the length we need to move.
As we go into one of the most important elections of our time, today is a good day to remember why we are doing this. We too need to continue to move people forward.

I do also feel there is a need for sound leadership involved behind the words of inspirational speakers. It’s all a great civics lesson.
This election is so historical, so significant, so much of what was fought for in the 1960’s. I’m very proud to be part of these times … to see a diverse choice of candidates for the highest position in this country. Hurray for us!
