Youth Hungry for Change in Nebraska Caucus

Young voters have turned out in record numbers to support the Democratic presidential candidates in early primary states. This exciting trend will continue on Saturday, February 9th as Nebraska Democrats hold their first ever presidential caucus.

The caucus will give young voters in Nebraska the opportunity to make their voice heard in national politics like never before in their lifetime.

“Young people have always rallied to the Democratic Party’s progressive vision, but – after seven years of George W. Bush – they are hungrier than ever for a true change of course for the entire nation,” stated Kyle Michaelis, President of Nebraska Young Democrats.

“It’s the Democratic candidates who are connecting with this new generation of voters. Don’t be surprised when they are the deciding force in Nebraska’s caucus,” continued Michaelis. “It’s our future. Young people have realized we have the most at stake in this election.”

Nebraska Young Democrats (NYD) has engaged in an aggressive campaign spreading word about the caucus. More than 300 high schools across the state were contacted about students’ right to participate if they will be 18 years old before the general election on Nov. 4th, 2008.

NYD has also led an unprecedented effort to organize Young Democrats in support of their favorite presidential candidates on the popular Facebook social networking website. In its online caucus, Sen. Barack Obama has consistently had more than ten times the support of any other candidate.

Although NYD leaders are not unanimous in supporting a single candidate, all three of Nebraska’s representatives on the Young Democrats of America National Committee have endorsed Sen. Obama. In doing so, they are joined by the presidents of NYD’s two largest chapters at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

NYD is the youth caucus of the Nebraska Democratic Party.
