OMAHA, Neb. – With less than a week to go before Nebraska’s first presidential caucuses, Democrats are doing all they can to let people know where to go and what to do on Saturday.
“I figured I’d better know what to do next week,” said Mary Mudd, who attended a practice session held Saturday at Omaha’s North High School. “I don’t want to be surprised.”
Kimberly Smith said she’ll do some research this week to help her choose between Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.
“I had no idea what a caucus was,” said Smith, who also attended the mock caucus.
She isn’t alone, but party leaders want to make sure everyone knows how to participate.
Here’s how it works:
Voters will be asked to stand in groups with others who support their favorite presidential candidate.
At the practice session Saturday, people split quickly into sides, with all but a few dozen of the more than 250 people standing up for Obama.
“I don’t care if he’s black, red or purple, we need a change,” said Eula McKell of Omaha, who moved quickly to the Obama side.
Clinton supporter Judy Cameron said she “has the experience, and I liked Bill.”
Each group has to have at least 15 percent of the attendants’ support to be considered viable. If a group has less than 15 percent, the people in it can either join another group or sit out. A spokesperson for each candidate can try to lure the undecided voters to their group.
Once everyone is either in a viable group or sitting out, the percentage will be reported to the county party.
Delegates for each county are divided according to the percentages. If a county has three delegates, and one candidate got 66 percent of the vote, he or she would get two of the votes, and if another got 33 percent, he or she would get one. Those delegates will be represented by people who will attend the state convention and be bound to pledge their vote to the candidate who won the vote.
If it’s not that even, there’s a formula built in to decide who gets the votes.
There’s no way to vote anonymously in a caucus. Some people voted with a sort of absentee ballot, called a preference card.

What I do know is that the statements about the results violates the intent of the caucus excercise that the DNC has set forth. I may not know what a caucus is, but I know a Straw Poll when I see one.
I am not sure what the author’s intent was. I don’t care if Mr. Obama was sitting in the room serving hope and humble pie, these kinds of statements should not be on this website…. period.
Its too bad the NOVPP didn’t use better judgment about the results of their practice session. Very disappointing indeed.

This article must be removed from the Party’s site. If you want to publish an article on the functioning of a caucus, then write an unbiased article that does not violate party rules.

Couldn’t the NE Dems have just moved up their primary? I think I’d much prefer that than going through this. Politics is already “bare knuckle” enough. Do we have to pit voters against one another too?

Otherwise, ease up. I am just guessing but the traffic on this website has only recently picked up (hmm? I wonder why?). If everyone is so concerned, volunteer and help out.

They know that the best way to control the results is to control the number of citizens attending the caucus.
Even on this site, if you click on “Our Candidates” you’ll be told, “This page will be updated as we get closer to the May 2008 primary.”
Are they trying to keep us in the dark?
