John McCain Supports 100-Year War at the Expense of Nebraska Families

LINCOLN, Neb. – This week marks the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq war. The war, which has made us less safe while diverting critical resources from Nebraska’s priorities, is now costing U.S. taxpayers $12 billion per month. [Wall Street Journal, 3/13/08; AP, 3/10/08]

For the cost of one week in Iraq, the United States could hire 51,000 police officers to make America safer; for four months in Iraq, low-income kids could be provided health care for five years; and for just three weeks in Iraq, 1.4 million kids could be enrolled in Head Start and to get them the education they need. But instead of siding with Nebraska’s families, John McCain is choosing to support a war without end in Iraq. [Speaker Pelosi Fact Sheet, 8/29/07]

“John McCain’s continued support of the war and President Bush’s failed policies shows that he is out of step with Nebraska values,” said Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Steve Achelpohl. “Despite the Iraqi government’s failure to make the political progress that the surge was supposed to make possible, John McCain continues to make excuses and not hold anyone accountable – all while supporting a war that’s costing too much money and too many lives. That’s not the kind of leadership Nebraska’s families want, and that’s why voters in Nebraska will reject John McCain’s promise of a third Bush term in November.”

Since the beginning of the war, nearly 4000 men and women and uniform have lost their lives, including 43 from Nebraska. Since September 2001, nearly 1.7 million U.S. troops have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Max Yashirin and Richard Carter, Democratic candidates for Congress in the First and Second Districts, respectively, both served proudly in Iraq.
