Heineman Vetoes Bill to Help First Responders
Apr 22, 10:17 AM CST
On Monday, Governor Dave Heineman vetoed a bill that would have given first responders – including police officers and fire fighters – access to compensation for mental trauma associated with the horrific situations these men and women routinely face.
Heineman said the bill would dramatically increase the cost to local government. That claim, however, is suspect at best:
[Senator Cornett of Bellevue] said other states have found it is inexpensive to add mental injuries to workers’ compensation for first responders.
“There’s no doubt we’re going to help people with this bill,” she said.
In fact, she said, the cost is higher without it, because of the cost to train new police officers and paramedics who can no longer work without treatment for mental and emotional trauma they experience as part of their jobs.
Only about 2% of all claims would fall into this category, based on the experience of other states.
Of course, now that session is over, the legislature won’t have the opportunity to override the Governor’s veto.

As is, if she’s so convinced this bill was “going to help people,” she should have thought of that before casting her lot with a Governor for whom that’s of so little concern.
