NRCC Sounds Alarm

After another stunning Democratic victory in a ruby red district last night, the National Republican Congressional Committee has their backs up against the wall… and they’ve hit the panic button.

Real Clear Politics has the story:

...National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Tom Cole issued a surprisingly blunt statement about his party’s own chances (in 2008), coming a week after a national poll showed Democrats leading Republicans by a wide 50%-32% margin on generic congessional ballot tests. “Tonight’s election highlights two significant challenges Republicans must overcome this November,” Cole said. “First, Republicans must be prepared to campaign against Democrat challengers who are running as conservatives, even as they try to join a liberal Democrat majority. Though the Democrats’ task will be more difficult in a November election, the fact is they have pulled off two special election victories with this strategy, and it should be a concern to all Republicans.”

“The political environment is such that voters remain pessimistic about the direction of the country and the Republican Party in general,” Cole continued. “I encourage all Republican candidates, whether incumbents or challengers, to take stock of their campaigns and position themselves for challenging campaigns this fall by building the financial resources and grassroots networks that offer them the opportunity and ability to communicate, energize and turn out voters this election.” (emphasis added)

Our Democratic Congress has been working since day one, and voters haven’t been fooled by Republican attempts to blame the current problems in Washington on Democrats.

Congrats to the DCCC and the Mississippi Democrats on a great victory last night. Here’s hoping that it’s a sign of things to come.

  1. We have always had conservative Democrats in our party. I find it ridiculous when the republican party says this kind of crap but they continue to do so (and perhaps at their own peril).
We have always had people in our party that were and are social conservatives but political liberals.
I think for some republicans this is confusing (perhaps it’s confusing for some of us liberal democrats as well) but what I think the major difference is (and this, of course, is just from my own experience)..
A given “conservative democrat” may be anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, etc. due to their religious beliefs but he or she see’s separation of church and state as one of the most important parts constitution (if not THE most important part).
Also, the idea of legislating against any persons civil libertys is repugnant to most any democrat. Straight across the board.
Thus, it’s rare that you find a democrat of any flavor voting their religion.
Typically, democrats look at the facts (not the religious arguments) presented to them, then we vote.
The conservative republican has no problem voting their religion and how they interpret or have their minister interpret the bible, is how they vote.
There are exceptions to the rule but these are difference’s I have noticed between the democrat conservative and the republican conservative.
(btw, I am aware that republican conservative sounds redundant but I have run into a few “liberal republicans” in my day…now THOSE conversations were interesting! Bizarre but interesting.)
    My two cents worth.

  2. I think Nebraska has a lot of conservative Democrats. They found the last two presidential election cycles very uncomfortable as the republicans portrayed all of us as baby-killing, gay-marriage supporting, flag-burning people when many democrats don’t hold those social issues close to their hearts.

On the other hand, the democrats I know well want poor people cared for and educated, want us to be the great positive leaders of the world … not the great arrogant bullies, want all people treated with basic respect, and want, at the same time, for us to pay our bills. It’s an interesting dichotomy but it works for many people.

I sometimes think the basic difference between being a democrat or a republican in Nebraska is whether or not your great-grandparents came here with money and how bad you want to keep it for yourself … all other things being equal.
