LINCOLN, Neb. – During a video on his campaign website, Mike Johanns attempts to connect the war in Iraq with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This Bush administration talking point was used numerous times when defending military action against Saddam Hussein, but has since been thoroughly disproved.
In Scott McClellan’s new book, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and What’s Wrong with Washington, the former Bush administration Press Secretary refers to a “culture of deception” during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. McClellan admits that the intent was to mislead the public and the media about the true goals of the Iraq War. Attempting to draw a connection between Saddam Hussein and Usama bin Laden was a major tool of that campaign.
“This lame attempt to connect Iraq with September 11th puts Mike Johanns and his campaign firmly in the middle of the culture of deception that we have to thank for this unnecessary war,” said Matt Connealy, Executive Director of the Nebraska Democratic Party. “It’s unfortunate that Mike Johanns has adopted the same misleading and disingenuous rhetoric as his former boss, President Bush. Nebraskans deserve a Senator who can talk about the issues like the War in Iraq without falling back on Bush administration talking points.”
Mike Johanns, who was a member of President Bush’s cabinet from 2005 to 2007, continues to wholeheartedly support the invasion and occupation of Iraq, which Scott McClellan referred to as both “unnecessary” and “a serious strategic blunder.”
