Custer County Convention
Jun 10, 09:48 AM CST
The following was sent to me by Don Davis in Custer County:
A standing-room-only crowd of Custer County Democrats elected Charles “Butch” McGinn as chairman at Sunday evening’s county convention at the museum in Broken Bow. McGinn of Anslemo succeeds long-time chairman Paul Carothers who was honored for his years of service through what was described as “tough times for area Democrats.”
Sandi Skillett and Don Davis, both of Broken Bow were elected vice-chair and secretary respectively, and Dee Adams of Merna is the new treasurer.
In separate groups led by Emory Haynes and Stan Sedlecek, the 61 county delegates present selected delegates to the State Democratic Convention to be held in Fremont, June 20-22. Butch McGinn and Dee Adams will go to Fremont pledged to Barak Obama, while Sandi Skillett will attend pledged to Hillary Clinton. Alternates to the state convention are Paula Smith and Don Davis. Delegates pledged to Clinton will continue that support until she officially releases those votes.
Matt Connealy, Executive Director of the Nebraska Democratic Party addressed the assemblage, laying out the challenges facing the party across the state. While conceding that the presidential race is the most important one for the nation, Connealy focused most of his attention on the importance of electing Scott Kleeb to the U.S. Senate. Of Kleeb’s opponent, Connealy said, “Mike Johanns is a party yes-man who constantly takes credit for the accomplishments of others. Nebraska needs progressive representation in the Senate, and Scott Kleeb is the man for the job.”
Jane Fleming Kleeb, Executive Director of the Young Voter PAC and Scott’s wife, was to be the keynote speaker at the county convention, but a scheduling conflict prevented her attendance.
Congratulations to Butch McGinn and the Custer County Democrats for a fantastic convention.
