Steve Achelpohl Statement on Independence Day

OMAHA, Neb. – Today, Nebraska Democratic Party Chairman Steve Achelpohl released the following statement:

“On this Fourth of July, as we celebrate our nation’s independence with our friends and families, our thoughts are naturally with those that have served our country in the Armed Forces. We owe them our deepest gratitude for their valor and their devotion. Today, it is especially important that we honor their sacrifice and service by recommitting ourselves to the ideals of our Founding Fathers and their vision for our country.

“Freedom, justice, and individual liberty are the values that unite us as Americans. It is my hope that it is these common values that guide the voters of Nebraska as they decide who will best serve as our next President, Senator, and Congressmen.”

  1. Is the simple act of putting the flag in our lapel necessarily an act of real patriotism?

  2. No, Thomas, you must also support a Constitutional Amendment that would “protect” our flag, imprison those who won’t demonstrate the proper respect for our cherished national bolt of cloth, and allow the secret police to render desaparecidos of those who mistakenly believe that the U.S. Constitution is what should really be protected.

(disclaimer: for those slow to “get it,” the preceding was a form of sarcastic irony)

  3. Let’s be blunt:cleverness is not what was asked for,but a straight answer.
Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft and George W.Bush all avoided military service during the Vietnam war.
The first two had multiple deferments and the latter flew over Texas in the reserves.
Today they all wear Old Glory in their lapels.

  4. I think that having a flag lapel pin on the breast of Bush Jr., Cheney, and their fellow war criminals, is more of a crime than that of anyone burning, or otherwise desecrating, Old Glory.
