Energy Policy Exposes True Mike Johanns

Republican Senate candidate Mike Johanns must be on 2004 talking points, because he still doesn’t acknowledge the need to address climate change.

The article from the Omaha World-Herald can be found here:

Kleeb said he supports developing more nuclear power plants and off-shore drilling. And, he said, he could support drilling in Alaska if he were convinced it would lower fuel prices in the short term, which at this point he does not believe would happen.

But, he said, his priority would not be on drilling, but finding long-term sustainable energy sources.

“My priority is renewable energy. We can’t just drill our way out of this problem. Ethanol, wind, biofuels. These are great for Nebraskans, and they’re all within reach if we demand change,” Kleeb said.

But, Johanns has different ideas. He seems to think we can drill our way to energy solutions – and he doesn’t even acknowledge that climate change is an important issue:

Kleeb says the evidence suggests that greenhouse gases are causing the climate to change, while Johanns says it remains “contested science.”

...

“John McCain, Barack Obama and the National Academy of Sciences are all in favor of reducing carbon emissions as well. I’m not sure who he’s waiting for,” Kleeb said.

It’s clear that Mike Johanns – by ignoring facts and the best science of the day – is taking policy cues from George W. Bush. Fortunately, thanks to the Bush administration, most people no longer view reckless stubbornness as a positive character trait in policymakers.
