John McCain’s ‘Youth Problem’ About Ideas, Not Age
Young Voters Will Not Support More Of The Same

LINCOLN, Neb. – There won’t be many young voters in attendance when Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumed Republican presidential nominee, arrives in Nebraska later this afternoon for a scheduled fundraiser at the SAC Museum in Ashland. A lot of this has to do with the outrageous one thousand to fifty thousand dollar price tag on the event. But, it also reflects a larger truth that is being seen all across the country in this election year – McCain cannot connect and is failing to compete for the votes of young people.

Last month, youth-targeted national polling by Greenberg Quinland Rosner Research showed Democratic Sen. Barack Obama with a distinct advantage over McCain among voters under the age of thirty. With these voters, Obama leads McCain 60 to 33%. And, with those young people most likely to vote, that lead actually jumps to 66% for Obama to 33% for McCain, a clear indication of where the passion and the momentum rests with young voters in this election.

“John McCain has a problem with young voters,” stated Nebraska Young Democrats President Kyle Michaelis. “It’s about a lot more than the enthusiasm for Sen. Obama’s campaign or the fact that the 71 year-old McCain would be the oldest president to ever assume office.”

“Young voters are less concerned with the number of candles on John McCain’s birthday cake than they are McCain’s promise to continue President George W. Bush’s disastrous economic policies,” added Michaelis. “The same is true of their shared approach to the war in Iraq, which has cost this generation more than any other.”

“After eight long years, Bush’s failures have galvanized an entire generation searching for change that John McCain does not promise and will not deliver. He represents more of the same. That’s the beginning and the end of his problem with young voters,” said Michaelis.

Nebraska Young Democrats is the youth caucus of the Nebraska Democratic Party.

  1. Young voters? I’m seventy -three years old and he can’t compete for my vote and I’m a veteran.Look at Obama\s recent speech on foreign affairs and you’ll see why he is failing to attract our attention!

  2. There were actually many youth in attendance of McCain’s visit on Wednesday, including myself. The event was intended as a “fundraising event”, which explains the price of attendance. While Obama is accepting millions in campaign finances from rich ultra-liberals, McCain depends on the financial support from the America voters. If people would do their research, they would clearly see the vast differences between McCain and Bush. Obama lacks the experience to lead this country into the future and the youth of this country MUST BE AWARE OF FALSE PROMISES AND FAULTY LIP SERVICE!
