Ben Nelson Stands Up For Renewable Fuels
Jul 29, 09:53 AM CST
Senator Ben Nelson is fighting a proposal that would cut support for ethanol and other renewable fuels.
It seems the Bush-appointed head of the EPA has had closed-door meetings with Governor Rick Perry of Texas, who is seeking a cut in the EPA’s renewable fuels standard.
Governor Perry – George W. Bush’s Republican successor as Governor of Texas – is claiming that commodity prices have been driven higher by ethanol production. The Grand Island Independent refutes that notion:
While Perry wants the [renewable fuels standard] waiver because of his belief that ethanol production is causing feed and food costs to go up, a new analysis by a team of Purdue University agricultural economists found that commodity prices and feed and food prices are being driven up by a combination of factors, including high oil prices spurring biofuels growth, a weak dollar and world production and consumption.
The economic and foreign policy implications of importing millions of barrels of oil each day makes Senator Nelson’s continued commitment to domestic renewable fuels critical to our future, and we’re fortunate to have a Senator who is willing to stand up to the energy establishment on this issue.
