Big Oil Donors, not Omaha-Area Consumers
OMAHA, Neb. – Nebraska Democrats criticized Congressman Lee Terry today for his failure to address the energy crisis. During his tenure in Congress, Terry has consistently put the interests of his Big Oil donors ahead of the energy consumers in the Omaha area.
“If Lee Terry was truly concerned about the energy problems in our country, he would have sought solutions in the seven years he has sat on the House Energy Committee. It’s only now that he is in a competitive race for re-election that he appears to be concerned,” said Eric Van Horn. “To make matters worse, rather than work for a real solution to rising fuel costs, Terry is staging gimmicks like traveling to Washington to play make-believe Congress and collecting gas receipts from local residents.”
“To truly understand why Terry has not even tried to help energy consumers, voters in the Second District need to look at a different set of receipts: Lee Terry’s contributions from Big Oil,” Van Horn added.
In the last decade, Terry has received over $129,000 from oil special interests [Center for Responsive Politics].
When Lee Terry was elected in 1998, gas sold for $1.20 per gallon [US Department of Energy]; the average price today is $3.86 after reaching an all-time high of $4.11 in mid-July [CNN]. During that time, Lee Terry has offered no real solutions to rising energy prices.
