AP: McCain blasts Farm Bill, ethanol subsidies

John McCain spelled out his economic vision for states like Nebraska:
Republican presidential candidate John McCain opposes the $300 billion farm bill and subsidies for ethanol, positions that both supporters and opponents say might cost him votes he needs in the upper Midwest this November.
Democrat Barack Obama is making a more traditional regional pitch: He favors the farm bill approved by Congress this year and subsidies for the Midwest-based ethanol industry.
Here’s the real gem of the article:
“I don’t support agricultural subsidies no matter where they are,” McCain said at a recent appearance in Wisconsin. (emphasis added)
Not many people are surprised that McCain is against ethanol subsides – he doesn’t like anything competing with his friends in the oil business – but to come out against all farm subsidies shows a complete disregard for the future of American agriculture.
The continuation of Bush’s economic policies and the ending of agricultural subsidies does not paint a very encouraging picture of Nebraska’s future in a McCain administration.
