Over 107,000 Nebraskans to Lose Health Insurance under Senator McCain’s “Radical” Plan
OMAHA, NE – Today, Tuesday October 7th, on the heels Senator Ben Nelson’s call at a Sunday press conference for Governor Palin to take the time to address McCain’s health care plan, Nebraskans await an answer. Under John McCain’s plan, health care benefits would be taxed for the first time in history, causing over 107,000 Nebraskans to lose their current health care coverage.
Far too many Nebraskans are struggling to get by without the health insurance they desperately need, and thousands more are fearful of losing their current health care coverage. Barack Obama’s plan will make high-quality health care affordable for all Americans. For those with insurance, Barack Obama’s plan will reduce costs for the typical family by up to $2,500. In contrast, John McCain’s plan will do nothing to reduce the number of uninsured. In fact, by taxing health benefits for the first time in history, McCain jeopardizes the coverage Nebraskans currently have.
“John McCain’s plan to tax working Nebraskans’ health care benefits, which would result in an estimated 107,000 Nebraskans to lose their current health care, is unconscionable,” said Obama’s Nebraska spokeswoman Erin Fitzgerald. “Nebraskans are still waiting for the explanation they deserve from John McCain as to why he’d rather try to use false attacks to tear down Obama, than talk about the issues at stake during this economic crisis. It’s not Barack Obama who will lose out if McCain won’t talk about his plans for the economy and health care– it’s the people of Nebraska.”
Senator Nelson made the following points on Sunday when he called on Palin to address McCain’s health care plan during her Omaha campaign stop:
“Senator McCain’s health care plan, which taxes employer-provided health care premiums for the first time in history, would make Nebraskans worse off. Today, there are 232,000 Nebraskans without health insurance, and thousands more who are struggling to keep their health coverage. McCain’s plan would jeopardize health care coverage it for an additional estimated 107,000 Nebraskans,” said Senator Nelson. “Too many Americans are living without health care coverage, and even more are afraid they may lose the coverage they do have. We cannot let Senator McCain let both groups down.”
