Ironic Posting on Congressman’s Website Catches Him with Fingers in the Piggy-Bank
Omaha, NE – In a video on Congressman Lee Terry’s campaign website [1], the Congressman clearly outlines his support for President Bush’s plan to divert Social Security Trust Fund dollars into private individual investment accounts. Right below that video is the current TV ad Congressman Terry is running in which states that, “Records show Lee Terry opposed privatizing Social Security.”
“Let me get this straight, one minute my opponent is talking about diverting Social Security dollars into private Wall Street accounts, and the next he is calling me a liar for saying he supports private accounts,” said Esch.
“The math on this is pretty simple. Americans will pay over $700 billion in Social Security taxes this year. Over the last year, the market has lost one-third of its value. So under Congressman Terry’s proposal, the American taxpayers would have seen over $233 billion in their tax money gobbled up by the greed of Wall Street. That’s not just risky, that’s reckless,” said Esch.
Terry signed a letter to President Bush’s Commission to Strengthen Social Security to show his support for President Bush’s plan to Privatize Social Security. Now in the middle of a contested race, Terry is trying to back track on his support.
“The choice is clear. Lee Terry is a Washington insider. The proof is that he’s still calling for privatizing Social Security during a historic Wall Street collapse,” said Esch. “Lee Terry’s brand of change is taking money out of our seniors’ piggy bank, the safety net of Social Security, and risking that money on Wall Street. It is flat-out a wrong idea, that jeopardizes our seniors.”
“Lee Terry should pull his false ads off TV. The Congressman states in his own words, on his own website that he supports privatizing social security. Deceptive politics like this show why we need change in Washington. And if you want change in Washington you have to change the people you send,” said Jim Rogers, Campaign Manager for the Esch Campaign.
