NE GOP Wants to End Nebraska's Relevance in National Politics (UPDATE with Link to Video)

The NE GOP is getting nervous. Now that they’re at risk at losing their stranglehold on the state, they want to change the rules. Anna Jo Bratton has the story:

Nebraska GOP chairman Mark Quandahl said the Republican Party wants to “put Nebraska in line with the 48 other states in the union that are allocating their electoral votes the correct way.”

He said they’ll urge a state senator to introduce a bill to repeal the unusual arrangement next year, but he objects to suggestions his party is being a bad sport.

“Pshaw. That isn’t true,” Quandahl said.

Wait. Is there really a “correct way” to award electoral votes?

Steve Achelpohl, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said this year’s presidential race has energized voters.

“I’ve never seen the people of Nebraska so revved up about the political debate,” he said. “Leave it to the Republicans to try to stifle that.”

The benefits of our current system aren’t lost on Nebraskans:

“It makes Nebraskans feel like they do matter,” said 61-year-old Antonia Ogaz of Omaha, who waited in line in the rain to vote early in Douglas County. “It means Republicans aren’t taking us for granted, because they can’t.”

The debate over Nebraska’s electoral vote system is a fight for another day. If nothing else, it reinforces the importance of getting out the vote not only for our Federal candidates but for lower ticket races as well.
