Obama's Victory in CD 2 Shows Growth Of Party As Well As Appeal Of Candidate's Message

OMAHA, Neb. – President-elect Barack Obama’s victory in NE-02, earning one of Nebraka’s five electoral votes, is the latest and most dramatic sign that the Nebraska Democratic Party is more competitive than ever.

“In a lot of ways, today’s success was years in the making,” said Steve Achelpohl, Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party. “Volunteers have been working tirelessly for quite some time to set the stage for the right candidate with the right message to find success in Nebraska. We got that candidate in Barack Obama, and Obama’s excellent campaign staff was able to capitalize on that momentum.”

“Since 2006, we’ve gained at least five seats in the state legislature and put Nebraska on the map with the Presidential Caucus. We have a plurality of Democrats in Douglas County. Without a doubt, the Democratic Party is moving in the right direction, and with leaders like Barack Obama and Ben Nelson we’re well positioned for future success,” Achelpohl continued.

Achelpohl, who will be stepping down later this month, has been Chair of the NDP since 2001.

  1. What a ride!! This was an incredible journey, an amazing experience to have been a part of this campaign. I learned a lot. What an organication! (Don’t mess with the community organizer!)

Hats off to Steve for his leadership these past years and to the State Party staff for the countless hours of devoted work. John Berge put together an amazing group of young people from acaross this state and across this country, including the NDP staff and “our Jessica”—refrence to Jessica Rathbun, on leave from Tom Whilte’s office. Add to this, thousands of energic volunteers and we had the win we longed for for many years!

We went from “Yes, we can,” to “Yes, we did!” We CHANGED CD 2 to CD Blue!
