OMAHA, Neb. – On Saturday, November 15th, Nebraska Young Democrats (NYD) will pay tribute to the incredible role of young voters in the 2008 election at their 3rd Annual Forever Young Dinner. NYD is the youth caucus of the Nebraska Democratic Party.
In his historic victory, Democratic President-elect Barack Obama was favored by voters under the age of 30 by an unprecedented 2-to-1 margin. This included huge gains in Nebraska, where exit polling indicates Obama won over 54% of young voters.
Results were similar in the “Nebraska Student Vote” sponsored by the Nebraska Secretary of State and the Omaha World-Herald. In that straw poll of more than 63,000 students in elementary, junior, and senior high schools across the state, Obama won with 51% of the vote compared to Republican nominee John McCain’s 46%.
“The vast majority of these students could not make their voice heard in the 2008 election,” stated NYD President Kyle Michaelis. “However, this generational embrace of Obama’s message of change and unity holds great promise for the future of the Democratic Party in Nebraska and across the country.”
A celebration of youth in Nebraska politics, this year’s Forever Young Dinner will be held at the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Thompson Alumni Center. The dinner begins at 6:30 pm. Limited seating to the $50 per plate dinner is still available.
Besides Obama’s impressive gains, the dinner will also celebrate the election of incoming State Senators Heath Mello and Jeremy Nordquist. These two longtime friends of NYD represent the next generation in Nebraska politics and will bring a welcome blend of common sense and progressive vision to the Unicameral.
After recognizing those Young Democrat leaders who contributed the most to successes in this election, NYD will proudly close the dinner honoring Omaha City Councilman Jim Suttle with its 2008 Forever Young Award.
