The recently enacted economic recovery bill will help bring tangible relief to older Nebraskans suffering from the worst economic crisis in decades, with more than $1 billion coming to our state.
Among the bill’s provisions is a $250 relief payment for older people not eligible for the Make Work Pay credit; extension of health insurance and unemployment benefits; extra Medicaid assistance to the states to protect health care for the most vulnerable; an increase in food stamps and nutrition assistance for the elderly; and funds for weatherizing homes to reduce energy costs.
AARP commends U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson for his leadership and support for the measure. While this landmark legislation is a crucial first step, there are many challenges ahead to bolster and stabilize the housing and credit markets. As an organization that regularly works with both sides of the aisle, we are hopeful for bipartisan solutions as Congress and the new administration move forward.
