  1. GOP Scores Lowest Ever Fav Numbers in NYT Polling

The days are only growing bleaker for the Republican Party. As bad as the 2008 election was for the GOP—losing the White House, losing nearly two dozen seats in the House (on top of nearly three dozen in the preceding two years), and losing as many as seven Senate seats (on top of six during the previous cycle—the current political environment may actually be worse for the party.

According to the latest polling from The New York Times and CBS News, less than a third of the country (just 31 percent) holds a favorable opinion of the Republican Party—the lowest mark ever in 25 years of the survey. Nearly three-in-five respondents (58 percent) view the party in a negative light.

The numbers for the Democratic Party are nearly inverted, with 56 percent rating the party positively and 34 percent rating it negatively. Barack Obama’s approval numbers are the best he has seen in the survey, as well, with 66 percent approving of the job he is doing as President and just 24 percent disapproving; this comports quite well with the aggregate of polling, which has shown the President’s numbers moving upward in recent weeks.

Watching the cable nets, you might come away with the impression that these numbers are significantly different—or at least that they weren’t so skewed. But, no, in reality, the country is overwhelmingly siding with Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, and against the Republican Party.
