Twenty-one people from across the area gathered in Papillion Saturday evening, June 6 at the home of George and Peg O’Dea Lippert for a health care organizing kickoff, one of thousands being held across the country. Diane Withem, Papillion, assisted.
The meeting was designed to inform participants of the need for quality, affordable and accessible health care in the nation and to plan an event to involve community members.
Too many families and small businesses no longer can afford health care. The current system, with skyrocketing costs, represents one of the greatest threats to our fiscal health and recovery. The fact that some of the 46 million uninsured citizens live in our own community was evident from the stories shared by participants regarding their own and family members’ hardships from lack of health care coverage.
All members of the community are invited to participate in a “Healthy Food” drive to benefit the Sarpy County food bank. The collection site will be the Papillion City Park, downtown Papillion, on Saturday June 27 from 10 a.m. to Noon.
Healthy, non perishable foods can be found in the “health food aisles” of your favorite local supermarket. Other food items such as those with low sodium, whole grains, and canned water-packed tuna and chicken are good choices.
