Organizing for America strengthens its ground game across the country to supplement health care reform efforts

Washington, DC – Organizing for America (OFA), a project of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) dedicated to supporting President Obama’s agenda for change, today announced the official launch of its Summer Organizer program. Just as President Obama answered the call of service to organize communities on the south side of Chicago, Americans from across the country will be joining Organizing for America’s efforts for health care reform as Summer Organizers.

In May, OFA accepted thousands of applications from Americans willing devote their summer to supporting President Obama’s efforts for reform. This last weekend, more than 300 of these organizers started their work with OFA in states across the country, giving volunteers and supporters the tools and resources to continue having conversations about President Obama’s three principles for health care reform; reducing costs, ensuring choice of doctors and plans, and providing quality affordable care for all Americans.

Summer Organizers will be a crucial link in OFA’s grassroots movement to make health care reform a reality in 2009. They will work throughout the summer organizing their local communities in support of President Obama’s plan to fix America’s broken health care system. In the coming weeks, Organizers will be working to bring supporters together for OFA’s National Health Care Day of Service on June 27th. Volunteers across the country are organizing these service events in response to President Obama’s call to service back in January of 2009.

“It is very exciting to have these Summer Organizers joining us in the important work of getting health care reform passed in 2009. These Summer Organizers will work closely with our staff at the ground level to ensure our volunteers and supporters have the resources they need to make lasting change,” said Mitch Stewart, Director of OFA. “The diverse backgrounds and experiences these men and women bring to the Summer Organizer program will be crucial in our effort to get meaningful change for all Americans”

As President Obama told supporters and organizers on a recent Organizing for America conference call, Americans cannot afford to wait another year for health care reform. Forty-five million Americans lack health insurance and every day more are priced out of the system by skyrocketing premiums or denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. President Obama has called on Americans for action on health care and together with these Summer Organizers, Americans across the country are answering that call.
