Kaine to Lead Service Event at DNC Fall Meeting in Austin, TX
Washington – Tomorrow, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine will lead a community service event at SafePlace, a nationally recognized domestic violence and rape crisis center in Austin in commemoration of the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001 and on the first National Day of Service and Remembrance. President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law last April, legislation that connects hundreds of thousands of people to community service opportunities and officially recognizes September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The Democratic National Committee’s fall meeting is currently underway in Austin, TX.
“The attacks of September 11, 2001 brought Americans together in a remarkable spirit of unity, patriotism, determination and compassion,” said DNC Chairman Tim Kaine. “The tragic events of that day serve as a stark reminder that our fate as individuals is inherently tied to the fate of our nation. I can’t think of a better way to commemorate the American spirit and the heroism we witnessed on 9/11 than by giving something back to our communities and to each other.”
President Obama has made community service an important part of his presidency. Last spring, the President launched “United We Serve” – a nationwide summer service initiative that calls on all Americans to participate in our nation’s recovery and renewal through community service. September 11th is the culmination of the initiative, which encourages participation in service activities that promote clean energy and energy efficiency, education and literacy, increasing access to health care and community renewal.
“The service event tomorrow is opportunity to honor the victims of 9/11, the heroic first responders of that tragic day and our brave men and women who have fought for our freedom. It’s also an opportunity to recommit ourselves to serving our communities,” Kaine said. “Democrats will continue to heed President Obama’s call to service.”
Chairman Kaine has been a life long proponent of public service. In 1980, Kaine took a year off from school to serve as a volunteer missionary in Honduras teaching carpentry and welding to poor teenagers.
