December 1, 2009

Washington – Every December 1 since 1988, people around the world have come together to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, remember those who have lost their lives and provide support to those who are living with the disease. DNC Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement in recognition of World AIDS Day 2009:

“There are more than 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS around the world, including more than 1 million here in the United States.

“Today is an opportunity not only to raise awareness about the disease, but also to remember those who have lost their lives and recommit ourselves to fighting for those living with HIV/AIDS by investing in prevention, new treatments, medications and support services.

“President Obama has demonstrated critical leadership on HIV/AIDS issues. The Administration is developing a comprehensive national strategy to address the epidemic domestically and a global health initiative to build on the progress made around the world during the past several decades. In October, the President signed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act, bipartisan legislation that will provide medical treatment and support services to more than half a million Americans living with the disease. And the Obama Administration, with approval from Congress, has also eliminated the HIV entry ban, thereby ending discrimination against those with HIV who are visitors to the United States.

“When the very first cases of HIV/AIDS were discovered more than 30 years ago, patients were treated with fear and discrimination. Now, thanks in part to global efforts like World AIDS Day, we’ve made tremendous progress in raising awareness about the disease, treating those afflicted by it and lessening its stigma.

“Democrats are proud to stand with President Obama as we continue to make progress combating HIV/AIDS at home and renewing our leadership role on the issue abroad.”
