Senator Mello: Put politics aside and join us in working to lower healthcare costs

OMAHA, NE –Nebraska State Senator Heath Mello released the following statement today:

“Historic times call for historic leadership and Senator Ben Nelson’s announcement of support for health care reform proves once again that he is someone willing to look for thoughtful solutions and put Nebraska first.

“By contrast, Senator Johanns and Congressman Terry have done nothing in this debate to make healthcare more affordable and voted against increasing healthcare access for Nebraska’s children. Even worse is that Senator Johanns tried to obstruct a thoughtful debate on how to solve the health care crisis that threatens Nebraska’s economy and state budget.

“Unfortunately, too many have put ‘win-at-all-costs’ partisanship ahead of doing anything to lower health care costs, close the Medicare doughnut hole, and eliminate discrimination based on pre-existing conditions.

“As a State Senator who has existing legislation (LB 637) that would increase competition between insurance companies to lower costs for small businesses, I am eager to hear details from Governor Heineman on his proposed health care reform legislative agenda for the upcoming 2010 session.

“Nebraskans need Governor Heineman to put politics aside and join those of us already working hard to lower healthcare costs.”
