A STATE OF THE STATE MESSAGE IS WITHOUT SUBSTANCE
In response to Governor Heineman’s state of the state address, Nebraska Democratic Party Chairman, Vic Covalt, released this statement:
“The State of the State Address by our current Governor, Dave Heinemann was a huge disappointment. Fluff and feel good claims do not cut it in a sagging economy. What is the plan to address the looming budget crisis? Other than saying “cut, cut, cut” and no new taxes, Heineman offered no clue as to how he will address the $630 million dollar shortfall in 2011. He just cut $335 million out of an already tight budget; now revenues are down another 10% and he has no answers? We have a real budget crisis, and Heineman hardly mentions it.
“There is no substance and no new proposals in the speech. The government avoided the hard questions of what he is going to do about a State Government that doesn’t work. Unemployment claims are not being processed leaving the unemployed without food on their table; Beatrice State Developmental Center remains under Federal Court order and is being operated without Medicaid reimbursement. We lost millions on the failed Medicare Management Information Center. Employees are overworked and now losing more ground by taking furloughs. Morale in state offices is at an all time low.
“The State of the State is not very good and Dave Heineman has no answers. You can’t eat fluff and that is all he gave us.”
