Nebraska Democratic Party Congratulates Mark Fahleson

The Nebraska Democratic Party would sincerely like to congratulate Mark Fahleson, Chair of the Nebraska Republican Party, for his efforts to help elect a pro-choice candidate to serve in the U.S. Senate. Fahleson, along with other Nebraska Republicans, personally made thousands of phone calls to voters in Massachusetts in support of Scott Brown (R-MA) in last night’s special election in the Bay State.

This unprecedented support goes against a recent resolution made by Pete Ricketts to the Republican National Committee. Ricketts, who failed in his campaign to unseat U.S. Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) in 2006 and currently serves as the Nebraska Republican Party’s National Committeeman, co-sponsored a resolution advocating that support and funding be withheld from candidates who do not agree with a set of conservative policy positions. Clearly the Nebraska Republican Party commits to those ideals in name only in our state and easily discards them when a victory in another state seems possible. Julie Schmit-Albin, Director of Nebraska Right to Life, recently raised questions regarding her organization’s intent to deny endorsements to pro-life Democrats; even candidates who have previously been endorsed by the organization. Some have accused Schmit-Albin of turning Nebraska Right to Life into an arm of the Republican Party and making the issue a solely partisan one.

While Martha Coakley (D-MA) could have been a welcome addition to the U.S. Senate to replace U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, Brown has the potential to cross party lines to draft legislation helping all Americans and not just focus on the interests of the Republican Party.
