Courage (cour∙age)
–noun
“The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.”

During the summer of 2009, filmmakers James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles, posing as a pimp and a prostitute, sauntered into the offices of ACORN, on the false pretense of seeking advice on how to run an illegal business. In these encounters, O’Keefe went so far as to secretly record the conversations he had with ACORN employees – a violation of Maryland law.

At the time the lawsuit was filed by ACORN against O’Keefe in September 2009, Mike Johanns praised O’Keefe and Giles for their illegal actions, “I applaud them for their courage and feel so badly that ACORN decided to let it fly and sue them.”

On January 25, 2010, James O’Keefe was arrested by the F.B.I. as part of a plot to illegally wiretap U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu’s phones. This case has continued to make front page headlines as O’Keefe has repeatedly violated the gag order issue by the court and has Twittered about the on going investigation.

So what is Mike Johann’s definition of courage?

1. Secretly recording conversations – a violation of the law. Check!
2. Attempting to wiretap the phone of an elected official. Check!
3. Violating the court’s gag order. Check!

If this is what a “Profile in Courage” by Mike Johanns looks like, do we really want to know who the winners are?
