STATE SENATOR DANIELLE CONRAD FILES FOR RE-ELECTION

Conrad also has a Campaign Kick-off Event Set for Thursday, February 25, 2010 5:30-6:30 p.m.

LINCOLN – Nebraska State Sen. Danielle Conrad filed today for re-election to a second term in the Nebraska Legislature. Conrad represents District 46, which includes the central and north Lincoln neighborhoods of Downtown, North Bottoms, Hawley, Clinton, Malone, East Campus, University Place, and Havelock. Conrad will hold a campaign kick-off event on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 pm. The event will be held at Steelworkers Local 286 Union Hall at 5724 Seward Ave., in Lincoln. The event is free and open to the public.

Sen. Conrad is an independent voice in the Legislature. She is a proven leader who listens, works in a non-partisan way, and has delivered positive change for North Lincoln. During her first term, Conrad has been a consistent voice in favor of tax relief and has voted for the largest tax relief package in Nebraska history, ensuring that Lincoln homeowners have real property tax relief. She has also worked to repeal the marriage penalty in state income tax, and for repeal of the tax on construction labor, which has stimulated growth and economic development.

Sen. Conrad has also been very supportive of efforts to benefit working families. She has introduced and passed bills to create and retain high-wage quality jobs in Nebraska; has led the fight to make sure Lincoln schools get a fair share of state aid, which keeps Lincoln schools strong and Lincoln property taxes low; and has secured priority funding to keep tuition low at the University of Nebraska and at the state’s community colleges, giving all students an opportunity for a brighter future.

She has also introduced and passed legislation to raise the state minimum wage, which has benefited more than 60,000 working Nebraska families, while lessening their reliance on public assistance; and, established for the first time in Nebraska law, a statewide scholarship for children of first responders who are killed in the line of duty.

Sen. Conrad was first elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 2006 and has served as a member of the powerful budget writing Appropriations Committee which has authored very conservative state budgets that hold the line on state spending. In 2008, she was elected by her peers to serve on two additional leadership committees; the Committee on Committees and the Legislative Performance Audit Committee, which she serves as Vice Chair.

Conrad has been awarded the Patty Steele Memorial Award For Excellence in Public Advocacy by the American Cancer Society, for her work to expand access to the Every Woman Matters Program that promotes treatment and screening for breast cancer; and the 2009 Harold Sieck Public Official of the Year Award from the ARC of Nebraska in recognition of her work as a member of the Appropriations committee to support Nebraskans with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
