Whiplash from Johanns.

Watching Mike Johanns and the stimulus funds causes severe whiplash. Johanns has repeatedly railed against the stimulus funds and his belief that the money won’t help the economy. Johanns has uttered wild statements about the stimulus funds like, “…it would be hard for me to imagine that we are going to be creating many jobs here,” and “the money would simply never reach the economy.”

Yet according to the Washington Times, Johanns whipped around on his position on the stimulus funds. Republican Johanns secretly wrote a letter pleading with the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to fund one of Johanns’ projects.

Johanns also must have missed the memo about where that “mountain of wasted money” went once it reached Nebraska. The Army National Guard in Lincoln received $3.5 million in stimulus funds to help with operation and maintenance, which also created new jobs.

Based on his “no” vote one year ago against the stimulus funds, clearly Johanns thought that those jobs were entirely unnecessary.

Yet Johanns went out of his way to use the resources of the Army National Guard on February 17, 2010 when he arrived in Grand Island “early Wednesday aboard a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from Lincoln.” The same Army National Guard he voted “no” on creating new jobs at their facility and giving them funding for operations and maintenance. Was it necessary for Johanns to fly in a Blackhawk helicopter to ride just the brief ninety miles from Lincoln to Grand Island?

The only thing more unpredictable than the weather in Nebraska is which direction will Mike Johanns head next?
