“OMAHA Mark Lakers says he wants to be Nebraska’s governor. Problem is, few people have heard of the guy.

Not a real point of advantage when it comes to politics.

So why would an unknown and untested politico who is used to working behind the campaign scenes decide to run against a popular incumbent governor less than a year before the election?

Lakers said that after 30 years as a successful businessman, he wanted to lend his know-how to public service.

The 50-year-old Democrat from Omaha had initially thought he would seek a spot on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, citing his interest in education. But Lakers said after weeks of conversations with state Democratic Party leaders and the encouragement of “a couple of hundred” friends and associates, he’s looking to trade his glass- and dark wood-trimmed investment banker’s office in west Omaha for the marble and limestone of the governor’s office in the state Capitol.”
