Hagel Casts Deciding Vote In Favor of Record Budget Deficits

On Wednesday, Senator Chuck Hagel cast the deciding vote against an amendment to the budget resolution that would have required Congress to reign in the federal deficits by offsetting the cost for any new spending or tax cuts. Known as Payasyougo or “Paygo” budget rules, these budget rules keep spending in check and enforce balanced budgets in Congress.

The bipartisan amendment, offered by Sen. Russ Feingold (DWI) and Sen. Lincoln Chafee (RRI) and supported by Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson, failed on a 5050 Senate vote. If Chuck Hagel had voted for fiscal responsibility, the Senate budget would reduce the ballooning federal deficit.

Chuck Hagel should get an Oscar for talking like a fiscal conservative while walking like fiscal loose cannon,” said Barry Rubin, Nebraska Democratic Party Executive Director. “He casually votes to mortgage the future of every generation of Nebraskans by refusing to address the federal deficits.”
