From the Road: Touring Southeast Nebraska

Jun 06, 09:44 AM CST

This weekend, I went back to my roots. I traveled throughout Southeast Nebraska for Conventions. The weekend kicked off in my hometown of Falls City where Richardson County Democrats gathered for the County Convention. Candidate Maxine Moul, a Representative for David Hahn, and the NDP National Committeewoman, Kathleen Fahey energized the Democrats in Richardson and the momentum from that Convention did not cease while traveling throughout Southeast. Doug Merz, County Chair, was proud of the turnout in Richardson and was ecstatic to see representation from the Nebraska Democratic Party and from local, statewide, and national campaigns.

From Pawnee County to Gage County on over to Cass County and then back south to Otoe, Johnson and Nemaha Counties, the energy from guest speakers was welcomed and much needed in the sea of red in Southeast. State Chairman Steve Achelpohl addressed Southeast Democrats about the NDP’s three main objectives this Election Cycle: recruiting and supporting candidates, building the Democratic community; and holding trainings across the State to equip candidates and activists with the tools to win elections. Johnson County Democrats listened and acted. They organized a local County Party, something that has been lost over the years, and they are one of many Counties that are tossing around the idea of doing a fundraiser for Candidate Maxine Moul. Nemaha County Democrats also followed the lead in re-building their local party infrastructure by organizing another meeting to keep and increase the momentum of the group.

The power of the seven counties in Southeast Nebraska shows the entire state that they are not going to be considered sitting ducks; they are putting their best foot forward in the efforts to get Democrats elected. Julie Bear, Cass County Chairwoman, expressed it best by saying that there is “strength in small numbers.” This is definitely true for Southeast Nebraska, where the Democrats are strong, proud, energized and ready to get Democrats into office!

  1. That’s great news Whitney!
We’ve been looking into “adopting” one of our adjoining counties until someone steps forward to lead them. Laurie Lush, the Chair in Harlan county said they’d be happy to help out all the Dems in Furnas County while we will be inviting all the Gosper County Dems to join us here in Phelps. If we keep it up, it won’t be long before we realize full participation of all 93 counties.
No Democrat in Nebraska need feel abandoned. Let’s do all we can to help get those last thirty or so counties up and running.

  2. Don’t even bother. SE NE and NE NE are Republican bastions. Let’s focus on the west.

  3. Reg,
Every Democrat, wherever they live, is a member of our family. We won’t leave even one behind.
Personally, I like the fact that Gov. Dean came up with the 50 state strategy and that Nebraska has adopted it as its 93 county strategy.
Giving up before the battle even begins is a sure fire way to lose.

  4. Yeah, matter of fact, reg, why should we even try in any county in this state? It’s obvious we’ll lose anyway. That attitude is one that I hear far too often from Democrats in this state, and I hope it’s something that will change over the next several years.
