From the Road: 2006 State Convention

Aug 19, 04:59 PM CST

We’ve concluded our business for the day here in Grand Island. I don’t think anyone will disagree – this has been a convention to remember – and we’re not even finished yet.

This morning, the convention nominated incumbent Democratic State Auditor Kate Witek to be our Party’s nominee for the office. Kate gave an incredibly moving speech telling us why she made the decision to switch parties. There was a spirited discussion followed by a vote.

Steve Achelpohl was re-elected as our State Chair. Audra Ostergard retained her seat as 1st Associate Chair, and Mike Meister of Scottsbluff was elected Second Associate Chair.

David Hahn, Maxine Moul and Jim Esch shared their vision for our future and inspired all of us with their spirit and drive to win.
Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson electrified the crowd with a speech that had everyone rolling with laughter and jumping to their feet with enthusiastic applause. If there was any doubt whether or not Democrats support our Senator, they were laid to rest today.

It was a great day for our Party. More to come as the convention will reconvene in the morning.

  1. Convention coverage by the press was lousy! Yes it was a great convention with great speeches. But the only the only article was about our newest party member and newest candidate. We did much more then this one issue. When we bring our convention to a community we should require the local news media to give us some press coverage.
