Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Open Thread

Jan 15, 01:19 PM CST

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who changed the course of a nation and worked for the common good of all mankind. During his lifetime Dr. King foretold of a vision and a hope for an America full of potential and greatness. Since Dr. King’s death we have made tremendous progress toward alleviating the remnants of inequality and racial injustice, but there is still much work to be done.

As we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy we must rededicate ourselves to the dream that he forecasted more than forty years ago, a dream of racial justice and economic equality for everyone. On today’s King Holiday the best opportunity we have to memorialize his dream is through our service to others. We commend all Nebraskans who will honor Dr. King’s legacy today with not just their words but through their deeds.

  1. Here is a link to the series of events scheduled this week to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

    http://mlkweek.unl.edu/

A number of lectures, films and plays will be presented all week at UNL, so please come and share and participate.

The occasion of Martin Luther King Jr. Day is also a call to service. I understand that in Omaha the UNO Student Organizations and Leadership Program (SOLP) hosted a special Day of Service in honor of Dr. King’s birthday.

“A day ON, not a day OFF.”

  2. I just noticed the web site for the Nebraska Democratic Party Black Caucus this evening.

    www.ndpblackcaucus.com

This is the first time I’ve ever come across this web site.

Why isn’t there a page on the Nebraska Democratic Party web site devoted to links to other Democratic Party organizations found across our state?

Here are just a few examples…

    Nebraska Young Democrats: www.nebraskayoungdemocrats.org

    UNO College Democrats: www.unodemocrats.com

    UNL Young Democrats: http://www.unl.edu/yd/

    Nebraska Democratic Women’s Caucus: www.nebraskawomendemocrats.org

    Democratic Divas of Nebraska: http://democraticdivas.org/

    Nebraska LGBT Democratic Caucus: http://lgbtdemocrats.org/

    Douglas County Democratic Party www.douglascountydemocrats.com

    Lancaster County Democratic Party www.lancastercountydemocrats.org

What other Nebraska Democratic Party affiliated organizations or caucuses are missing from this list? Are there web sites for the Latino and Labor Caucus too?

Let’s work to build community, cohesion, and togetherness within the Nebraska Democratic Party.

  3. Hey everyone,

I don’t know if anyone else has heard but Sen. Allard from Co has announced he would not be seeking another term.

This is great news for Democrats and for 08. Maybe when we get to Colorado we could picth in at our candidates headquarters to help deliver another seat.

  4. Robert,

I am glad you found the caucus website but it is not the fault of the party for not having the site listed.

I’m the owner of the site I pay for it and I own the domain name and it was down for awhile but I’m making an effort to update it with with a few things.

Much has taken place over this last election cycle. I would like to highlight the congressional black caucus and some local events it is just a matter of balancing time and getting together with the caucus’ volunteer webmaster.

  5. Actually the Black Caucus website is listed, as are other caucuses that have websites. You can find that list here.

  6. Eric,

Thanks for sharing this information. It does illustrate some of the challenges encountered in trying to navigate the site. To find the information, I think it is necessary to click on these tabs – About Us, NDP Leadership and State Executive Committee, and then scroll down the list to the respective caucus chairs. In the past year, I have received email inquiries from 4 or 5 Nebraska women seeking information about our group.
