February SCC Meeting in Pictures

Feb 12, 03:51 PM CST

I took a camera to document the action at the recent State Central Committee Meeting. Here are some of the pictures:

Executive Director Matt Connealy greets fellow Northeast Nebraskan Dave Armstrong.

Super-volunteer Monie Brownson and Secretary Carol Blood work the registration table.

First District caucus.

Second District caucus.

Third District caucus.

National Committeeman Vince Powers talks to the First District Caucus about the upcoming Presidential caucuses.

Computers bought by the coordinated campaign were available for county chairs to take home.

Headed to the women’s caucus meeting.

Deb Quirk of Adams County talks to County Chairs and other delegates.

Glen Murray, Duane Jones, and Deb Quirk talk to Eric Fought.

A spread of sandwiches available for delegates and guests…

...and it didn’t take long for folks to find them.

Ian Russell (right) talks to Matt and Eric before his voter file training.

All in all, I really enjoyed my first SCC meeting. We addressed some important issues and I look forward to continuing our great work in the coming days.

  1. Some might think it’s a little bit corny, but I think these sorts of photos are precisely what we need more of on this blog to show Nebraskans that their Democratic Party truly is alive and well…..and ready to fight on their behalf.

Thank you to both of the Erics for the wonderful job they are doing with the website. Keep up the great work.

  2. Photos are a harmless substitute for hard news if you don’t want to take time to update the right side of the page every month or so or take a realistic approach to the real issue—we are losing too many elections.
Happy talk and calls for unity keep coming from the koolaid drinkers, but those strategies continue to fail us. Maybe it’s time for change?

But speaking of elections and the dearth of hard news, how did Achelpohl do in his election, the one he has been campaigning for for several years? Or is that something else that is none of our business?

  3. TB-

Before labeling everyone who does not share your perspective as a “Kool-Aid drinker”, you should remember that the Kool-Aid isn’t the problem. It’s the poison that kills.

From your ever-repetitive posts, it seems one form of that poison is all you have to offer.

When you’re done whining and are ready to get back into the business of electing Democrats and changing Nebraska for the better, get in touch and we’ll do a lot of great things together.

  4. “Rhymes-with-denial”-
You keep ignoring my (repetitive) point. Put down your koolaid and face reality—we are NOT electing Democrats. There are reasons for our failures, and it has nothing to do with “staying positive” or “staying united” or any of the other happy-talk mantras that have put us in the longest losing streak in our history. We don’t need propaganda, we need performance. Being a sycophant should not be the #1 qualification for a job with the NDP.

The poison that is killing our chances is the attitude that we can keep doing what we are doing and get a different result.

Change is not our enemy, it is our salvation. We need democratic institutions and leadership that doesn’t have to bring their lawyer to meetings. We need to trust and respect our own people, abandon the circular firing squads and get some people who know what to do and how to do it. The dead wood has proven over and over that they cannot win elections.

  5. I think that what ever problems anyone may have had with the previous NDP staff, it’s not fair to carry that animosity over to the new staff. This is a chance for a new start. A chance to put the past behind us and move forward.

Give Matt, Eric, and the rest of the staff a chance to prove themselves, and work with them. You are assigning blame to individuals who have had their jobs for a matter of weeks. Kyle states it well: stop complaining and start doing something.

  6. TB

I, sometimes, found myself agreeing with you or even defending you back in the early days of this new blog…

but if you wanted radical change from the NDP… you got it. There’s been a complete turnover of staff; shift in priorities, etc.

Now, I agree with Dave, Kyle, etc.

Let’s do something to build our party and start winning elections. complaining when there’s no cause isn’t going to help anyone.

//and thanks for the photos eric!

  7. You guys sound like George Bush, the same type of negative spin. Because I am honest about the electoral failures does not mean that I do not support “the troops,” or that I have not done my share (and some of your share) to win elections. This is just spin to avoid dealing with the real issues.

The problem is not that I don’t support the troops, the problem is that the policies of the civilian leadershiip have failed.
    trublu    Feb 13, 12:39 PM CST #
  8. tb, but your problem is with the old leadership. Whatever problems you had with Barry or any of the old staff, I assure you, you are not alone (just go back into the archives of this blog). But the new staff deserves a chance to show what they can do, they don’t deserve blame for the failures of others.

You’re absolutely right that something’s not working. But you’re not even giving the new staff a chance to make things work.
Dave Sund    Feb 13, 01:07 PM CST #
  9. Dave-
I don’t believe the root problem is staff. They’re not making the key policy decisions. It’s the people who hired the staff that are making the decisions that have caused this losing streak. That’s where the problems must be addressed if we are going to turn things around and start electing Democrats. The systemic failures are not in the handful of employees, they are in the handful of oligarchs who set policy for the employees.

You and Kyle are focused on the office, but I do not believe they deserve the blame (Barry was out of control, but that reflected the priorities of his boss). Leaders who have to bring their personal attorney with them to meetings are the real problem. They are not serving rank-and-file Democrats, they have a different master. Until we accomplish a paradigm shift and realize that the state party works for 370,000 registered Democrats, and not for one special interest group, we cannot realistically reverse losing trends. That’s where the focus belongs, and it will take a lot more than hiring a few employees, no matter how talented they are (and some of them are very good indeed).

  10. For the LOVE of GOD!,

I am so sick of all the accussations and inuendos. If people have proof that something is a foot then by all means produce it or shut up already.

I too in the past have been a loud critic of the party but the things that I have been hearing latlely are of no help to anyone.

I tend to put my money where my mouth is so I am asking all the naysayers to go to the proper forum that was set up for these types of discussions.

If you belive that Steve or anyone else on the SEC isn’t doing their job then the time and place to be heard is at convention!

If you know someone better for the job then get them to run or run yourself.

It is getting to the point that I don’t even come around here much anymore because instead of hearing what we should could be doing to win.

All I hear are accussations and inuendo.
Please let me know what I can do to help register and get democrats to the polls.

Tell me what I need to do to get good democrats ready and able to run!

So if any of you can do that please let’s have the conversation. All of this nastyness is doing nothing to help our cause.

  11. Robin-

I apologize for bringing up irrelevant issues like the necessity of reforming the party so we can reverse the decline and win elections. Waste, fraud and mismangement are downers to discuss. My bad for straying off-topic.

I guess your point is that party reform is only relevant every two years at the convention, only we can’t discuss it then either because it is “too divisive” in an election year. Let’s keep doing what we are doing, stay positive and united, and wait for the next Jim Exon.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately?
    trublu    Feb 13, 08:25 PM CST #
  12. Tru,

You really are quite childish. I’m not saying that discussing ways to improve the party isn’t a warranted discussion but baseless accusations does nothing for the party.

It especially doesn’t help when first time bloggers come here and see it.

Are you a SCC member? If you are and since you do have access to the internet there is a forum for this type of discussion.

Frankly, I’m quite sick and tired of people making accusations with out submitting any proof beyond baseless assumptions. It’s time for people to either put up or shut up.

We have got to start thinking about the Mayors race in Lincoln and how we are going to pull off the caucus in 08.

I can’t send intrested people here to check out the party. they would take one look at this thread and never come back.

No one is saying that everything is great within the NDP but some us are trying to make it great!

If you have ways to do that been by all means let’s hear them.

Come on we’re waitingggg. I really want to move beyond this and start working on a game plan to win.

So does anyone have any ideas? anyone ?
