Saturday, May 6th was an important day for Democrats in Nebraska. In welcoming Senator Barack Obama – one of the most exciting and engaging political leaders this country has seen in decades – Nebraska Democrats came together in numbers greater and more diverse than they have in years.
On the weekend before a primary election that has seen Republicans spending millions of dollars for months – cluttering the airwaves and dominating the headlines – this was an essential opportunity for Nebraska Democrats’ to prove their unity of purpose and vision as we embark on a general election campaign that will decide the course of Nebraska’s future . . . and perhaps the nation’s as well.

Mail Call, Jeff!
Mon, Jan 23 02:55 PM CST
Tom Dorsch of Beatrice recently wrote a letter blasting Rep. Jeff Fortenberry for not returning Tom DeLay’s dirty money.
Even though Tom DeLay has been indicted on two felonies, forced out of his leadership position and three times reprimanded by an ethics panel controlled by his own party, Fortenberry refuses to return dirty money from a political action committee controlled by DeLay.The Journal-Star website is taking comments on Mr. Dorsch’s letter, so please take a second to support him by calling on Rep. Fortenberry to do the right thing. When you’re done with that, head over to the NDP communications center and write a letter yourself. Make sure to let us know if it gets published and we’ll throw it up on the blog! Why is Fortenberry blind to his ethical obligations and unable or unwilling to do the right thing?
Maybe we can’t compete with the special interests when it comes to the money we pay. But we can decide whether our elected officials deserve to keep their government job.

Great Job Everyone!
Thu, Dec 1 12:12 PM CST
Congrats everyone. Jeff Fortenberry says he is going to give the $4,000 in campaign contributions he received from Duke Cunningham to the Lincoln People’s City Mission. You can read about it in this Omaha World Herald article.
I know several reporters who called Fortenberry’s office yesterday after getting our press release about the petition. They were asking him repeatedly if he was going to donate the money. Your efforts led to his donation to a worthy charity!
Even though Fortenberry complied with our request, there is still more to be done. He still has not given up the $20,000 in contributions from Tom Delay. Please continue to sign the petition and tell your friends to as well!
www.nebraskademocrats.org/dotherightthing
You made a difference yesterday. Not only did your actions bring attention to Fortenberry’s connection to the culture of corruption in the Republican Party, but it ended with the People’s City Mission receiving a plump donation just in time for the holidays.
For those of you who don’t know much about the mission, it is a homeless shelter that is filled to maximum capacity. One of my last stories as a reporter was at the Mission this summer. The Director told me requests to stay there were skyrocketing, in part due to an increase in the number of women and children leaving domestic abuse situations with nowhere else to go.
Because of you, those families in need will have a better holiday season. Great job!
Donate the Dirty Dollars
Wed, Nov 30 02:54 PM CST
As you might have noticed on our homepage, the NDP has created a new online petition asking Rep. Jeff Fortenberry to donate $4,000 to charity. Four-grand is the amount of money the 2004 Fortenberry campaign received from Rep. Duke Cunningham’s American Prosperity PAC. Cunningham’s money is contaminated by the more then $2 million dollars in bribes he took. Cunningham was near tears as he admitted how appalling his behavior was. “The truth is I broke the law, concealed my conduct and disgraced my office,” Cunningham told reporters. Fortenberry should make the same acknowledgement by donating the $4,000 he received from Cunningham’s dirty money to a charity right here in Nebraska. Use your voice and tell him to do so by signing our petition: www.nebraskademocrats.org/dotherightthing You can also check out the NDP Press Release by clicking here.

59% Say Resign

If he does not resign, 47% believe he should be removed from office, while 29% were undecided.
No Treat for Nebraskans
Mon, Oct 31 03:12 PM CST
It was almost a Halloween treat for Nebraskans. It turns out the numbers ranking Nebraska 50th in economic growth were only preliminary and have been adjusted. Iowa is still in the top ten but fell to (a still impressive) 8th in economic growth.
Where did Nebraska end up once the numbers were adjusted?
49th
The Nebraska economy only grew 1.5-percent in 2004, just barely edging out Michigan, which only grew its economy 1.2-percent.
If you go to the website for the Bureau of Economic Analysis and scroll down a little bit, you will see a map clearly detailing how each state performed. Almost every state economy around us grew at least twice as much as ours did.
This is the scary reality Republican leadership has carved out for Nebraskans.

Democrats Make Progress While Republicans Are Busy Cutting Ribbons
Tue, Oct 18 03:29 PM CST
Our energy press conference yesterday received some great coverage in today’s papers. The Lincoln Journal Star had a very comprehensive article on their front page. It’s shocking to see that Governor Heineman cited his example of supporting renewable energy by showing up for a ribbon cutting at a wind farm. I suppose he doesn’t know any better since he’s pretty much been cutting ribbons his entire elected career. If any politician has been pushing for Nebraska to harvest wind energy, it is State Senator Don Preister. Over the last 10 years, he has repeatedly offered legislation that would require renewable resources to be used for electricity.

Burr in Heineman's Britches
Thu, Oct 6 10:09 AM CST
Tuesday, Governor Heineman told the press that the Hergert investigation should end, and the Legislature should move on to other topics. Oh really? I wonder why our appointed Governor who’s running for election wants this scandal to go away This is still a developing story. His own Attorney General and State Patrol hasn’t even finished their criminal investigation. Clearly this was a political ploy to get a damaging example of the GOP’s culture of corruption out of the headlines.
But thankfully, it seems some courageous state senator told Heineman to buzz off.

Hagel Makes a Stink, While Nelson Gets Work Done
Tue, Sep 20 02:37 PM CST
Chuck Hagel made a big stink today about opposing Senator Nelson’s legislation stopping the U.S. from importing Japanese beef. What happened when the vote went to the floor? Hagel was one of only 26 Senators to vote against it. Nelson’s amendment passed with a large bi-partisan margin of 72-26.
Student Rep Rips Into Hergert
Mon, Sep 19 01:38 PM CST
UNL Young Democrats President and ASUN Senator Matt Schaefer took his displeasure directly to the source on Friday: Regent Dave Hergert. Schaefer recently proposed a resolution unanimously passed by the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska asking Hergert to step down. At Friday’s Board of Regents meeting, Schaefer had harsh words for Hergert, who still refuses to resign.
“We feel that you are a stain on our democracy, an embarrassment to our state and a disgrace to our university,” said Schaefer as he spoke directly to Hergert. [Daily Nebraskan, September 19, 2005]To read more about this young Democratic leader and his confrontation with Hergert, check out these articles in the Daily Nebraskan and the Lincoln Journal Star.

Tue, Sep 13 12:27 PM CST
Carmyn and I drove past the Capitol yesterday and saw over 100 students gathered for the Anti-Bullying Rally. State Senator Gwen Howard was among the featured speakers. Sen. Howard introduced a bill last session the would prohibit verbal or physical bullying because of “race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity and expression, religion, sexual orientation, or a mental physical or sensory handicap or any other distinguishing characteristics.”
Senator Nelson Wants Gas Prices Investigation
Wed, Sep 7 02:06 PM CST
It is good to see our Democratic leadership doing something proactive on an issue that is affecting our pocketbooks everyday: gas prices. Senator Nelson’s new bill calling for an investigation into high gas prices is making headlines across the nation. The Senator wants the Federal Trade Commission to spend two weeks studying whether the rise in gas prices is the result of a struggling market or price gouging. You can read about it in the Omaha World Herald, the Grand Island Independent, and the Lincoln Journal Star. The Senator wants the focus of the investigation to be on the weeks leading up to Hurricane Katrina and the additional spike in prices that it supposedly caused.
The Journal Star article also highlights Nelson’s critical response to the slow disaster management in the Gulf. The G.I. Independent has an entire separate article in which Nelson questions the effectiveness of FEMA and the Homeland Security Department.
More Ethanol Could Mean Lower Pump Prices
Fri, Sep 2 11:50 AM CST
Gas prices are driving heavy discontent both in Nebraska and across the county. We don’t know how far down the road it will be before prices become stable and come back down to earth. Its nice to know that local Democrats are working diligently to find ways to make sure we don’t go down this path again.
Joseph P. "Sonny" Foster, III (1952-2005)
Mon, Aug 29 12:29 PM CST

Fellow Democrats –
Yesterday, we received the unfortunate news that our friend, Sonny Foster, passed away. Sonny served as Senator Ben Nelson’s Omaha District Director, and as his campaign manager for his two gubernatorial campaigns.
Since arriving in Nebraska, Sonny has been a personal mentor to me. His sage advice on numerous issues, as well as his institutional knowledge was a trememdous resource. Recently, he was instrumental in helping to create what is now the Nebraska Democratic Black Caucus. He truly took me and our entire staff under his wing, and I can’t begin to tell you how shocking and saddened we are.
My greatest memory of Sonny will be his positive outlook on life and his infectious smile. He spent his entire life trying to make the world a better place for all of us – not just Democrats or Republicans – but all of us. Nebraska has lost a true champion.
UPDATE Sonny’s service will be on Monday, August 29, 2005 at 1pm at the Salem Baptist Church, 3131 Lake Street, Omaha, NE. Sonny’s cousin, Bishop Lance Foster will officiate.

I shouldn’t have been surprised when I got a call from KLIN Friday about the anonymous campaign fliers circulated during this year’s Lincoln City Council race. The big news? Glenn Friendt was involved in creating and funding the mysterious mailers targeting Terry Werner and Dan Marvin.
Three's Company...or Cronyism?
Thu, Jul 28 02:29 PM CST
Is last week’s heat wave making me hallucinate?
Is there a Christmas in July haunt from the past floating around the capitol building?
Nope. Its real and it is definitely sending a repetitive message: the State Treasure’s Office is jinxed by its Republican occupants.

An interesting email from the Nebraska GOP came my way on Friday that focused on supporting Bushs Supreme Court nominee.
In the email, Lincoln attorney and recently appointed State Board of Education member, Bob Evnen said….
Remembering the Fallen
Fri, Jul 15 05:02 PM CST
The Lincoln Journal-Star reports on U.S. servicemembers with connections to Nebraska who have fallen in the line of duty:
As of Friday, July 15, 2005, 22 U.S. service members with connections to Nebraska have died in Afghanistan and Iraq since the beginning of military operations following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to the Department of Defense and family members.
Many are having misgivings about George W. Bush’s actions in Iraq, but the heroism, honor, and bravery demonstrated by the members of our armed forces is unquestionable.
To their memories, we say simply: thank you, from a grateful state and a grateful nation.

Former NEGOP Chair Dave Kramer will be facing off with Don Stenberg in the 2006 Senate primary. He’s also lost other campaigns, having been defeated for both State Senate and Lieutenant Governor.

Speech Topic in Line with State Democratic Vows
Sun, May 22 11:01 AM CST
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson’s speech title for Saturday’s Morrison-Exon Dinner resounded with a recurring Nebraska theme: Building a stronger Democratic Party.
He told the 650-plus in attendance Saturday that the strength of the national and state parties must come from a strong foundation of party members.
“I have counseled Democrats across this country, but the answers lie in the states – with governors, mayors and local officials who make policy and affect lives every day,” Richardson said.
Osborne Whisper Campaign?
Mon, May 16 12:24 AM CST
Osborne might want to take a page from the late President Ronald Reagan, who took office in 1981 at the age of 69 and answered questions about his age in a 1984 debate by saying he wouldn’t make an issue of Walter Mondale’s “youth and inexperience.”
