President’s Budget Ignores Concerns of Nebraska’s Working Families

Wed, Feb 7 08:18 AM CST

According to a new analysis by the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress, President Bush’s 2008 budget will cut millions of dollars from critical education, health care, homeland security, and law enforcement programs in Nebraska. While the President’s $2.9 trillion budget does little to address the rising economic insecurities that middle class Americans are facing, it slashes millions from programs that are essential to thousands of Nebraskans. President Bush’s new budget shows that he continues to ignore the will of the American people and by advancing a radical agenda that has already been rejected by the vast majority of the American people. After all, a Newsweek poll last week found that 58 percent of American simply want the Bush Presidency to end.

Senate Republicans Block Minimum Wage Hike for Nebraska’s Working Families

Wed, Jan 24 02:08 PM CST

Today, Republican Senator Chuck Hagel voted to block the Democratic plan to increase the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25, a plan that would have given a much needed pay raise to 136,000 Nebraskans. [CBPP, 8/2/06] As part of its first 100 hours agenda, House Democrats voted to increase the minimum wage for the first time in more than nine years – the longest period in the history of the law. During that time, Members of Congress have received a $31,600 pay raise, while the real value of the minimum wage has plummeted to its lowest level in 51 years. [Economic Policy Institute, 6/06]

First 100 Hours vs. Previous January Sessions

Thu, Jan 18 12:39 PM CST

The following is from the House Democrats Communications Office. Thought it was and interesting comparison.

As Democrats prepare to approve the final piece of the 100 Hours Agenda, an obvious contrast has emerged between Democrats quick action to deliver for American families and the previous leadership’s painfully slow starts. The previous Republican majority in the House of Representatives has a long record of inaction during January. In fact, the Republican leadership of the past barely averaged three days in session during the month of January, passing very little legislation, and sometimes none at all.

Why We Need to Remember Ann Richards

Many will remember Ann Richards, the former Governor of Texas for her wit, highlighted in her keynote address to the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. The speech put her in the national spotlight when she uttered the famous line, about the wealthy, then-Vice President George H. W. Bush, “Poor George, he can’t help it…He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.” Those words set the tone for her political future; she was a real Texan who established herself as a candidate who appealed to suburban voters as well as to the traditional Democratic base that included African-Americans and Hispanics.

My mind reels with all the possibilities, all the additional opportunities he could have created had he not been assassinated.

How far do you think American has come since Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his dream of racial equality? That was the question an “AP-Ipsos poll” (link) asked respondents last week. The emails released documenting Brown’s conversations during the Katrina disaster show the appalling truth about Brown’s inability to lead an effective disaster response. Brown was busy being consulted on what to wear and was slow to respond to requests for help. Some of the emails even make it sound like he didn’t know how to delegate workers and get supplies to those who need them. I want to know how to better cooperate with state and local government, to be able to answer that very question that you asked: Are we capable of dealing with a severe attack or another severe storm. Senator Nelson Wants Gas Prices Investigation

Wed, Sep 7 01:06 PM CST

It is good to see our Democratic leadership doing something proactive on an issue that is affecting our pocketbooks everyday: gas prices. Senator Nelson’s new bill calling for an investigation into high gas prices is making headlines across the nation. The Senator wants the Federal Trade Commission to spend two weeks studying whether the rise in gas prices is the result of a struggling market or price gouging. You can read about it in the Omaha World Herald, the Grand Island Independent, and the Lincoln Journal Star. The Senator wants the focus of the investigation to be on the weeks leading up to Hurricane Katrina and the additional spike in prices that it supposedly caused.

The Journal Star article also highlights Nelson’s critical response to the slow disaster management in the Gulf. The G.I. Independent has an entire separate article in which Nelson questions the effectiveness of FEMA and the Homeland Security Department.
