Welcome to the Hagel Circus

LINCOLN, Neb. – With Chuck Hagel’s non-announcement earlier in the week, conventional wisdom would say that Hagel needed to mend some presidential fences in case he decides to decide sometime later this year.

Case in point: the International Association of Fire Fighters presidential forum held in Washington D.C. yesterday. 11 candidates from both parties attended the event to make their case to perhaps the most bipartisan labor organization in the country.

Adding to his strained image from Monday’s debacle, today’s Washington Post reported: “Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) drew a polite but restrained reception. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), who announced Monday that he will announce later whether he plans to run for president, did worse. At one point, he praised volunteer firefighters – to the dismay of those in the union audience.”

“At this point of the Hagel circus, nothing suprises me,” said Steve Achelpohl, Nebraska Democratic Party Chairman. “From non-announcements, to flip-flops on his own resolutions, to now spraying water on fire fighters, Chuck Hagel has officially become the ring leader of the Hagel & Company circus.”
