Has Anyone Seen Our Attorney General?
LINCOLN, Neb. – In today’s edition of the Lincoln Journal Star, it is reported that State Senator Joel Johnson requested that Attorney General Jon Bruning provide the legislature with an informal opinion regarding a controversial smoking ban bill. According to the report, such an opinion may not be made available “until after the session winds down at the end of May.”
It is also noted in the article that Omaha Senator John Nelson requested an opinion from Bruning earlier in the session and was told that it would take four to six weeks.
And so, the citizens of Nebraska are wondering this morning if anyone has seen the Attorney General.
“The Unicameral operates on a very short timeline,” said former State Senator and Executive Director of the Nebraska Democratic Party, Matt Connealy. “The senators need to work fast to accomplish the work voters have asked them to do and when the Attorney General holds up that process, it limits the body’s effectiveness.”
Bruning has stated that he is “exploring” the possibility of running for Senate in 2008 and is actively raising money and recruiting volunteers.
“As Attorney General, Jon Bruning has a responsibility to all of us to get his work done before he puts time and energy into extracurricular activities,” said Connealy. “It appears he is unable or unwilling to do that. His next campaign can wait. The people of this state shouldn’t have to.”
