Nebraska Democrats Call on Governor Heineman to Veto Gas Tax Hike

LINCOLN, Neb. – Matt Connealy, Executive Director of the Nebraska Democratic Party, released the following statement following the Legislature’s vote today to advance the state budget to the Governor’s desk:

“Despite the efforts of Democratic state senators to remove the gas tax hike from the state budget last week, Republicans pushed it through. We call on Governor Heineman to follow the lead of our senators and oppose the gas tax increase. Nebraska’s working families, squeezed by record-high gas prices, clearly can’t count on Republican state senators. Can they count on the governor to stand up to the powerful roads lobby and veto the gas tax hike?”

The gas tax hike is part of the state budget found in LB 321. Democratic State Senator Tom White of Omaha introduced an amendment last week to strike it from the budget.
