Achelpohl Statement Regarding Heineman Decision to Refuse Stay in School Funding Lawsuit

LINCOLN, Neb. – Today, Governor Dave Heineman informed officials in the Nebraska Schools Trust that he would not accept their offer to stand down a lawsuit regarding funding equity for Nebraska’s children. The trust includes the school districts of Omaha, Grand Island, South Sioux City, and Lexington. OPS has been fighting to ensure fair funding for minority and poor children in their district for a number of years and the group had hoped to bring the issue back to the Nebraska Legislature next session.

Nebraska Democratic Party State Chair Steve Achelpohl released the following statement following Heineman’s decision:

“Today Governor Heineman once again showed an utter disregard for the needs of Nebraska’s most vulnerable children. His stubbornness will cost Nebraska taxpayers millions of dollars, dollars that could be going toward the education of children throughout this state.”

“Nebraska’s school funding system prevents a fair and equitable opportunity for all of our children to learn, including poor and minority children in our communities. This must be changed; and once again, the Governor shows absolutely no leadership through his decision.”

“We need to spend money on kids, not lawyers.”
