Who’s Paying for the Johanns Family Vacation?
LINCOLN, Neb. – President Bush’s go-to-guy on corporate farms and Farm Service Agency closures, Mike Johanns, travels to Nebraska this week. According to his spokesperson, the trip gives Johanns and his wife “an opportunity to spend time with their five grandchildren.” [Lincoln Journal Star, 8/29/07]
While Johanns is here spending time with the grandkids, he apparently is going to do some work during visits to Grand Island and Omaha.
On Saturday, he will apparently be christening the Nebraska GOP’s negative spin center, or headquarters, on N street in Lincoln. Media reports also indicate that Johanns will be attending the Nebraska-USC game at Memorial Stadium. [Omaha World Herald, 9/9/07]
And so, today Nebraska Democrats ask – are we paying for this trip?
“Since Secretary Johann’s press person is handling discussions of the trip, one has to seriously question whether American taxpayers are paying for this excursion,” said Nebraska Democratic Party Executive Director Matt Connealy. “We certainly want the Secretary to spend time with his family, but we shouldn’t have to pay for it.”
